Niall Horan has once again displayed his generosity during the COVID-19 crisis by donating €15,000 to Mullingar Meals on Wheels.

A spokesperson for the organisation, which each day provides dinner to 140 people living in the wider Mullingar area, said that they are “delighted” with the donation from Niall. The former One Direction man has received wide spread praise for his support of a number of organisations in recent months, including a €100,000 gift to Alone.

“The executive and all members of St Dominic’s Community Council are delighted with the very generous donation of €15,000 given by Niall Horan. This money is given to support the Meals on Wheels in recognition for the vital service it gives to the elderly who live alone and are unable to self cater in the Mullingar and surrounding area,” the spokesperson said.

“We are going to ring fence this €15,000. It will be used to upgrade the kitchen and expand the service to the people living in the outlying areas.

“We know that Niall recognises the importance of enabling the elderly to live independent lives at home among their neighbours and friends for as long as possible.

“Niall’s generosity and thoughtfulness are to be commended and we wish him every success in his illustrious career. Thank you from all who will benefit from this most generous gift,” he said.

Each week around 700 meals cooked by the kitchen team at St Dominic’s are delivered to elderly people by a team of voluntary drivers. The spokesperson commended everyone involved in Meals on Wheels for their “tremendous work” during these challenging times.

“Our kitchen staff are working at full capacity providing around 140 meals a day. We recognise the hard work and dedication of the team in the kitchen and also the many new volunteer drivers who have come on board since the lockdown and are doing such a splendid job. This team is energised by the encouragement and help that they receive in the form of personal donations and support from groups such as Mullingar Sub Aqua Club and Mullingar Lions Club,” the spokesperson said.
